Freight rail traffic through the Rubí tunnel will be restored on the night of April 28-29, following a month and a half of closure that has caused significant disruption to the transport sector.

Adif has announced the reopening of the infrastructure, which has been closed since March 12 due to its condition and the need for urgent reinforcement work. This measure brings an end to a period of collapse that has significantly impacted the rail freight connection with Europe via eastern Spain.
During the closure, the Generalitat's management proposed an alternative route that involved a considerable detour via Manresa towards Lleida and Sant Vicenç de Calders, adding 330 kilometers and five hours to the journey. However, few companies opted for this solution. Most preferred to transport goods by truck from La Llagosta (Barcelona) to the Port of Barcelona, increasing costs and delivery times.
The reopening will be provisional and will operate under a single-track system between Castellbisbal and Rubí-Can Vallhonrat. Operating hours will be 12 hours a day from Wednesday to Sunday, and 21 hours on Mondays and Tuesdays. This operation will remain in effect for at least one month, until pending work in the tunnel is completed. This is not the first time the infrastructure has been closed; it was inoperative for 15 days in January after a railway accident in Gelida, causing millions in losses.
The emergency works have involved the internal reinforcement of the structure across 123 of the tunnel's more than 900 meters, through the installation of metallic pieces and a reinforced concrete ring. These works, which were already planned, have been expedited due to the deterioration of the infrastructure. Adif maintains constant monitoring of the tunnel with over 30 sensors to ensure the stability of the sections not yet repaired and will continue with the reinforcement of the remaining length through an ordinary procurement process.
