The Council of Ministers has approved a 23.1 million euro package aimed at strengthening the sustainability and competitiveness of the primary sector in the Canary Islands.

The initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, includes a funding distribution that prioritizes both immediate liquidity for producers and long-term structural investments. Of the total budget, 17.9 million will be allocated to direct subsidies, while the remaining 5.2 million will be dedicated to strategic training projects and infrastructure improvements.
The program addresses the specific challenges facing productive activity in the islands, such as territorial fragmentation, rising input costs, and increasing pressure on water resources. These actions aim to ensure food supply and protect employment in rural and coastal areas.
Key interventions include irrigation modernization projects, with specific actions planned for the islands of La Palma and El Hierro. Additionally, resources will be allocated to upgrading maritime-fishing schools to encourage generational renewal and technical specialization.
The implementation schedule for these measures runs from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2027, reinforcing the institutional commitment to modernizing the regional agricultural and fishing fabric.
