After a 20-year career in the events industry in Venezuela, Ricardo Gil and Artemi Rodríguez decided to reinvent themselves and start a business in Gran Canaria. Their project, Obrador Neveri, stems from a passion for gastronomy and aims to offer high-quality products that combine Venezuelan flavors with recipes from around the world.
Their arrival in Gran Canaria, where they have lived for eight years, was a significant step. "Arriving in Gran Canaria was like opening the doors of our home and starting to walk," comments Artemi Rodríguez, whose father is from the Canary Islands. Their first entrepreneurial venture on the island, an event hall opened in January 2020, was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, adversity turned into opportunity. Their venue's terrace became a café, allowing them to understand the local palate and the island's multiculturalism. "We saw people from everywhere and said, yes, we can do this," explains Rodríguez. Despite the event hall closing, the experience was positive, fostering a valuable connection with the people of Gran Canaria.
The opening of Obrador Neveri on Tomás Miller street was met with great enthusiasm by the neighbors. "It was the arrival of neighborhood residents [...] people who told us: 'Look, we're here to welcome you to the neighborhood,' 'I want to try what you have.' It was truly a beautiful, beautiful welcome, which we greatly appreciate," recounts Ricardo Gil.
Neveri's philosophy centers on honesty and quality, offering an "open workshop" where customers can observe the entire production process. This transparency fosters a close relationship and allows for recipe suggestions. "They know it's us making it, that we're the ones who can change the recipe, and that we can also pamper them," adds Gil.
Currently, they prefer to remain in a "small context" and avoid industrialization, focusing on enjoying the process and offering natural products without preservatives or additives. "Here we are, two people in their sixties who feel like they're 20," jokes Artemi Rodríguez.
Neveri's offerings include a bakery with specialty breads (spelt, rye, whole wheat, carrot, beetroot), pastries described as "very indulgent, but not cloying" managed by pastry chef Asma, and preserves that fuse cultures, such as mango or banana mojos and carrot chutney. The Venezuelan ham bread is another of their successes, popular among the Venezuelan community, Canarians, and tourists.
