The Government of the Canary Islands has approved new aid aimed at self-employed workers, with the objective of improving work-life balance and boosting the hiring of people in vulnerable situations.

These measures, published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC), seek to offer significant support to self-employed individuals in the archipelago. The initiative includes subsidies to cover replacement costs for maternity or paternity leave, support family care, and promote the labor insertion of people over 52 years old.
The management of these aids falls under the Canarian Employment Service, and they will be granted strictly in order of arrival of applications until the allocated budget is exhausted. The fundamental purpose is to ensure that self-employed individuals can maintain their economic activity without sacrificing family care, a common challenge in self-employment.

"These measures aim to ensure that self-employed individuals can maintain their activity without giving up family care."

The new order establishes two main programs: the Concilia Program and the +Uno 52 Program. The first is divided into three lines of aid: one for hiring substitutes in cases of maternity, paternity, or pregnancy risk; another to finance the indefinite hiring of personnel dedicated to the care of minors, elderly, or dependent persons; and a third that covers up to 75% of care service costs, with a limit of 3,000 euros.
Regarding the amounts, subsidies for replacement due to leave can reach 1,100 euros per month, with a maximum of 8,800 euros. If the contract becomes indefinite, financial support could reach 9,000 euros. For indefinite hiring in care tasks, aid ranges between 7,500 and 9,000 euros, depending on the worker's profile.
The +Uno 52 Program is designed to incentivize the hiring of people over 52 years old, a group that often faces greater difficulties in re-entering the labor market. For each contract, the aid amounts to 5,000 euros, a figure that can increase to 6,000 euros if the activity is carried out in smaller municipalities. To access this subsidy, the self-employed individual must not have had employees in the previous six months and must commit to maintaining the contract for at least 12 months.
Applications will be processed exclusively electronically through the headquarters of the Government of the Canary Islands. The granting system is non-competitive, meaning they will be processed in order of presentation until available funds are exhausted. The specific deadline for each call will be announced in due course, although the regulatory bases have already been established.
