The Canary archipelago saw an increase in the formalization of mortgages on homes until last July, reaching 10,254 operations, representing a slight rise of 0.3% compared to the same period in 2025. This growth was concentrated in three of the seven islands: Lanzarote, which recorded a notable increase of 64.0%; El Hierro, with 41.7% more; and Gran Canaria, which experienced a 1.2% rise.
On the other hand, Fuerteventura was the island that saw the largest reduction in mortgages on homes, with a relative decrease of 21.7%, translating to 207 fewer operations compared to the previous year. Reductions were also observed in La Palma (7.5%), Tenerife (5.2%), and La Gomera (2.1%).
Gran Canaria positioned itself as the island with the highest number of mortgages signed between January and July 2026, totaling 4,227, which represents a 1.2% increase compared to 2025. In the specific month of July, 1,557 mortgages were signed in the Canary Islands, an 18.4% decrease compared to the same month of the previous year. However, significant increases were recorded in Lanzarote (151%) and La Gomera (120%), with 246 and 22 new mortgages respectively.
Regarding the total amount of mortgages constituted, Tenerife led the statistics between January and July 2026, with a loaned capital of 687.9 million euros. It is closely followed by Gran Canaria, with 611.6 million euros. These two islands account for 81.8% of the total capital allocated to mortgages on homes in the archipelago.
During the month of July, the registered amount for mortgages on homes was 240 million euros, representing a slight decrease of 0.7% compared to July 2025. The statistics also detail data on cancelled and modified mortgages, classified by the nature of the mortgaged property, including rural properties, homes, plots, and other urban properties.
