The company collaborated with over 700 suppliers of products, services, and supplies in the Canary Islands last year, as reported in a company statement. Mercadona highlighted the creation of 300 new jobs on the islands in 2025, bringing its workforce to over 5,100 people. The supermarket chain reaffirms its dedication to stable, quality employment through measures such as improved working hours, salary increases linked to inflation, and performance-based bonuses.
Purchases from local producers include 70 million kilos of bananas, seven million kilos of tomatoes, five million kilos of potatoes, and over two million kilos of avocados and watermelons, reflecting the company's focus on the Canary Islands' agri-food sector.
Mercadona's investment in the Canary Islands in 2025 amounted to 20.7 million euros. Of this sum, 17.5 million were allocated to improving its store network and implementing the 'Ready to Eat' section. An additional 3.2 million were invested in upgrades to its logistics centers in Ingenio (Gran Canaria), Granadilla (Tenerife), and its satellite warehouse in Fuerteventura.
The company opened a new supermarket in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, replacing two previous locations, and renovated a store in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. By the end of 2025, Mercadona operated 82 supermarkets in the Canary Islands, 71 of which already feature its efficient store model.
In its efforts against food waste, Mercadona donated 985 tons of edible food to 37 social organizations in the Canary Islands during 2025, equivalent to over 16,400 shopping carts.
