Mercadona has opened its first 'Tienda 9' in Gran Canaria, located in Telde, following a 3.6 million euro investment, introducing an optimized design for fresh products and an enhanced customer experience.

Supermarket chain Mercadona has inaugurated its brand-new 'Tienda 9' in Gran Canaria, specifically in Telde, within the Salinetas Industrial Park. This new establishment is distinguished by a comprehensive space reorganization, dedicating more area to fresh products and improving the shopping experience for its customers, whom the company internally refers to as «Jefes» (Bosses).
The renovation, which involved 40 construction suppliers and an investment of 3.6 million euros, transitions the store from a business-unit-based organization to one structured by processes. This evolution aims to streamline and simplify the shopping experience through a more intuitive product layout, while also facilitating restocking tasks and enhancing team coordination.
A key innovation is the Central Kitchen (Obrador Central), a zone that unifies the preparation of fresh products, including cutting, cooking, and packaging. This centralization reinforces the company's commitment to maximum quality and freshness, freeing up space in the self-service area and optimizing resource management. It is estimated to achieve energy savings of up to 10% and water consumption reductions of up to 40%.
In terms of technological innovation, the store features electronic devices and collaborative tools for self-management and optimized decision-making. The cold display units are equipped with Aerofoil systems to minimize cold air loss into the aisles, thereby improving refrigerator energy efficiency and in-store thermal comfort. Furthermore, the company utilizes CO₂ as a refrigerant, reducing environmental impact and enabling more efficient and sustainable cooling.
Technical upgrades to the machine rooms and equipment renewals ensure more efficient maintenance and enhanced long-term operational efficiency. This 'Tienda 9' model represents a significant evolution from the previous Tienda 8, forming part of a broader transformation plan with a total projected investment of 3.7 billion euros by 2033.
In line with evolving customer needs, the store includes a rest area for shoppers. The opening hours are Monday to Saturday, from 09:00 to 21:30. It offers a parking facility with 233 spaces, including 6 designated for electric vehicles. Online shopping services are also available via the company's website.
This renovation aligns with Mercadona's SPB (Siempre Precios Bajos - Always Low Prices) strategy, guaranteeing a quality shopping basket at the lowest possible price.
