The Council of La Palma has decided to extend the extra compensation for income loss from the 2022-23 campaign, linked to the volcanic eruption, to all banana growers on the island.

The agricultural organization Palca-Unión de Uniones and the cooperative Agusa have succeeded in having the Council of La Palma, chaired by Sergio Rodríguez (CC), extend the complementary aid for the 2022-23 campaign to all municipalities on the island. Initially, this compensation, amounting to 6.5 million euros, was only intended for farmers in five municipalities considered most affected by the Tajogaite volcano eruption in 2021.
The agricultural entities had filed appeals considering the exclusion of nine out of the 14 La Palma municipalities unfair. The initial administrative resolution had limited the aid to the municipalities in the Aridane Valley (El Paso, Los Llanos de Aridane, and Tazacorte), along with Tijarafe and Fuencaliente.
Following the efforts of Palca and Agusa, the complementary aid, funded by the Government of the Canary Islands through the Department of the Presidency (with Nieves Lady Barreto as minister), will now be extended to farmers who meet the requirements in the remaining nine municipalities. This expansion transforms the aid from partial to comprehensive for the entire island.
The President of the Council, Sergio Rodríguez, announced this extension in the most recent plenary session, responding to a question from the Socialist group. The decision aims to compensate farmers for production or income losses due to indirect factors such as access issues to farms, lack of irrigation, or decisions to maintain plants without replanting, thereby complementing the main aid delivered by the Department of Agriculture in April 2024.
