The director of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), Adasat Goya, has announced that the regional health department is working on the creation of a unified electronic health record for all its hospitals and health centers. This ambitious project is expected to be completed by 2031.
This project, named "Magec electronic health record", aims to provide the system with a single document for all centers within each health area. It is a priority and complex initiative that will be implemented in phases, addressing a long-standing demand from healthcare professionals who currently use different operating systems in each center.
The primary goal is to have a single IT operating system for managing patient records throughout the SCS. This project follows the launch of the Unified Health Record Viewer, which already allows professionals to access patient information regardless of where they were treated.
The unification of the operating system will align with the SCS's Digital Health Strategy and national and European regulatory frameworks for health data. It will also enable the development of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to reduce administrative burden and support clinical decision-making.
This new model will integrate all care levels, merging the technical and human gears to ensure care continuity and data quality. Furthermore, it will facilitate telemedicine and the integration of citizen-facing tools like miSCS, which already provides access to appointments, lab results, and reports.
During the executive meeting in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Plan Activa was also evaluated to reinforce surgical and consultation activity, as well as the implementation of a pathway for assessing Dependency Grade III+ for individuals with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and other severe, advanced, and irreversible diseases.
