Endesa Connects Tenerife and La Gomera: An Electrical Milestone for the Canaries

Endesa has successfully completed the synchronization of the electrical systems of Tenerife and La Gomera, a technical achievement that strengthens the Canarian grid and boosts renewable energy.

Endesa has successfully finalized the necessary final tests to integrate the electrical systems of Tenerife and La Gomera. Following the completion of these tests, both systems are now operating in sync, functioning as a single network, which represents a significant advancement for the Canary archipelago.
The synchronization occurred at 11:02 AM this Tuesday, after verifying the correct operation of several key circuit breakers. The unification of both systems, managed by Red Eléctrica de España (REE), has been the project's greatest technical challenge.
The connection, which includes an underwater cable and new infrastructure such as the El Palmar substation in La Gomera, not only enhances the robustness of the energy supply but also expands the capacity to integrate energy generated from renewable sources on the island.
The El Palmar substation, serving 15,610 customers, required an investment exceeding 8 million euros from e-distribución, Endesa's network subsidiary. These facilities occupy approximately 2,700 square meters and are equipped with two 40 MVA transformers, with the possibility of future expansion.
Prior to the coupling tests, maneuvers were carried out to commission the El Palmar substation, considered the most modern in the Canary Islands to date. This substation is linked to the Transport network of Redeia via a double bipolar underwater circuit connecting El Palmar to the Chío substation in Tenerife, ensuring operational safety and quality.
