Unemployment in the Canary Islands Hits Historic Lows: Lowest Since 2007

The Canary Islands ended September with 140,303 unemployed people, the lowest figure since December 2007, and long-term unemployment reached its lowest level since January 2009.

The archipelago registered a total of 140,303 unemployed people in September, a decrease of 4,156 from August and 5,070 fewer compared to the previous year. This figure represents the lowest registered unemployment level in the islands since December 2007.
Long-term unemployment also marked a historic low, standing at 62,835 people, accounting for 44.79% of the total unemployed. In the last month, this figure decreased by 491 people, and compared to September last year, the reduction was 4,469 people, or 6.64% less.

In September, unemployment decreased for both women and men. There were 80,952 unemployed women, 2,856 fewer than in August, and 59,351 unemployed men, 1,300 fewer than the previous month. By age group, unemployment fell for those over 25, while it slightly increased among those under 25 compared to August, although year-on-year unemployment decreased in all age groups.
Regarding hiring, 69,644 contracts were formalized in the Canary Islands in September, a 16.31% increase from August. Of these, 31,341 were permanent contracts, representing a 25.23% increase compared to the previous month.

The Director General of Labor, José Ramón Rodríguez, highlighted that the growth in hiring is occurring across all major economic sectors and all islands, with significant increases noted in areas such as services, industry, and education.
The increase in hiring extended to all sectors, with particular relevance in Other Services (31,356 contracts), Hospitality (21,979), Commerce (9,402), Industry (2,539), Construction (3,151), and Agriculture (1,217). Within Other Services, Education saw a notable monthly increase of 215.98%.
Hiring increased on all islands, with Gran Canaria recording the largest absolute increase (25,542 contracts), followed by Tenerife (31,734). Increases were also observed in Lanzarote (5,812), Fuerteventura (4,233), La Palma (1,630), La Gomera (496), and El Hierro (197).
