The Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín University Hospital is leading a pilot project to generate green hydrogen from renewable methanol, aiming to advance energy transition and reduce emissions in public hospitals across the Canary Islands.

The Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín University Hospital is participating in a pioneering initiative for green hydrogen generation, utilizing renewable methanol as its source. This project seeks to drive the energy transition and decrease polluting emissions within the public healthcare system of the Canary Islands.
The initiative is part of the Salud Zer0 Emisiones Netas 2030 (Net Zero Emissions Health 2030) program and aims to leverage the energy produced to meet a portion of the thermal and mobility needs of hospital facilities. It is estimated that over 30% of hospital energy consumption is dedicated to generating heat, hot water, and climate control for specific areas like operating rooms and clean rooms.
The residual heat generated during the hydrogen production process will also be utilized to enhance the overall energy efficiency of the installations. The Dr. Negrín will serve as a reference center for evaluating the feasibility of this technology and its potential expansion to other hospitals in the archipelago.
