The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy, through the General Directorate of Environmental Quality, has analyzed the progress in the implementation of the Canary Circular Economy Strategy (ECEC) and its action plans. The objective is to consolidate the circular transition in the archipelago, reviewing achievements and defining future work lines.
During the session, representatives from various departments of the Government of the Canary Islands and entities linked to the strategy reviewed the advancements made between 2024 and 2026 in key areas such as governance, support for municipalities, management of bio-waste, circular public procurement, promotion of eco-design, innovation, and data transparency.
The Director General of Environmental Quality, Ángel Montañés, highlighted the firm progress of the Canary Islands in implementing a real circular economy adapted to its unique characteristics, thanks to coordinated work between administrations, the private sector, and social agents. He emphasized that the circular economy represents a strategic opportunity for the region, creating new business opportunities and optimizing resource use.
Key milestones presented include the establishment of governance bodies, the creation of the Technical Office for Circular Economy, the development of circular public procurement instruments, and the promotion of initiatives in eco-design and bio-waste management.
The execution status of the Circular Economy Action Plans (PAEC) 2021-2023 and 2024-2026 was presented, with projections to reach 60% execution of the current plan by the end of this year. The update of the Canary Circular Economy Strategy 2021-2030 was also discussed to simplify its structure and align it with priority value chains.
The upcoming Action Plan 2027-2029 will focus on bio-waste, plastics, packaging, and construction, key sectors for a more efficient and sustainable economic model. The first draft will be prepared in the coming months, aiming for the new document to come into effect in January 2027.
