Air Traffic in the Canary Islands: Passenger Decline in March, but Quarterly Growth

Canarian airports saw a slight 0.9% drop in passengers during March, although the accumulated first quarter shows a 0.1% increase.

Airports in the Canary Islands handled a total of 5,018,261 passengers during March, representing a 0.9% decrease compared to the same period last year.

Of the total number of travelers, 4,992,204 were on commercial flights. Of these, 1,716,812 traveled on domestic routes, a 3% decrease from March last year, while 3,275,392 opted for international flights, showing a slight increase of 0.4%.
Regarding operational activity, 43,647 aircraft movements were recorded, 2.6% less than in the same month of the previous year. Additionally, cargo transport reached 2,651 tons, implying a 4.1% reduction compared to March 2025.
By airport, Gran Canaria led in passenger numbers with 1,498,110, experiencing a 0.6% growth. It was followed by Tenerife South with 1,373,730 passengers (-0.4%), César Manrique-Lanzarote with 794,349 (-0.6%), Fuerteventura with 624,124 (-2.8%), Tenerife North-Ciudad de La Laguna with 569,492 (-1.7%), La Palma with 127,356 (-9.2%), El Hierro with 22,347 (-5.2%), and La Gomera with 8,753 (-7.9%).
Despite the monthly decline, the balance for the first quarter of the year shows a positive trend. Between January and March, Canarian airports accumulated 14,157,283 passengers, 0.1% more than in the same period of 2025. Commercial passengers totaled 14,093,494, with 4,845,051 on domestic flights (-1.8%) and 9,248,443 on international flights (+1.4%). Aircraft movements were 122,856 (-1%) and transported cargo amounted to 7,918 tons (+0.2%).
