The Hungarian carrier, already the fifth-largest by passenger volume at Málaga's airport, will offer a total of 17 routes connecting Málaga with nine different countries. This expansion is a response to the high demand for travel to the Costa del Sol, a destination that has seen sustained growth since Wizz Air began its operations in 2011.
“"Málaga is a strategic destination with great capacity, being three or four hours away from Central or Eastern Europe, and can also be visited in the low season thanks to the climate and the diversity of Andalucía's offerings."
In addition to the new connections, the airline has increased frequencies on several existing routes, such as the one linking Budapest and Málaga, which will now feature daily flights. This capacity boost is part of Wizz Air's strategy to strengthen its presence in Spain, a country that accounts for 10% of the company's total capacity and where it flies to 16 airports, including Málaga and Seville.
The new routes from Málaga to Venice will commence on September 14 with two weekly flights (Thursdays and Sundays), while the connection to Turin will start on October 26, also with two weekly frequencies (Tuesdays and Saturdays). The company expects to reach nearly 13 million passengers in Spain by the end of 2026, with a 34% increase in its capacity in the country.
The managing director of Turismo Costa del Sol, a spokesperson, emphasized the critical importance of air connectivity for the destination, highlighting an 8.5% increase in planned airline seats for the next six months. Airlines are expected to offer a total of 9.6 million seats, connecting Málaga with 151 cities.
