The season for social events such as weddings, communions, and graduations, concentrated in May and June, generates extra spending that can compromise the budget allocated for summer holidays.

The so-called 'spring cost,' stemming from the season of weddings, baptisms, communions, and graduations, has become a financial strain for many families. The months of May and June concentrate a series of high expenses in a short period, with effects similar to January or September on current accounts.
Unlike holiday spending, the 'spring cost' is characterized by significant outlays in a brief timeframe. According to data from the Unión de Consumidores de la Comunitat Valenciana (UCCV), a wedding can cost an average of 40,000 euros, a communion around 9,000 euros, and a baptism approximately 3,200 euros. This economic pressure is exacerbated by a 'social spending escalation,' where previously simple events have become more elaborate, leading to cost inflation that particularly affects middle-class families.
To meet these expectations, driven by 'normative pressure' and 'behavioral economics,' households commonly resort to credit cards, deferred payments, or microcredits. While this softens the short-term impact, it can lead to significant financial costs and a debt spiral if not managed properly, compromising financial stability.
The main consequence of this high spring spending is a direct cut to the budget allocated for summer holidays. Many families are forced to reduce travel duration, choose more economical destinations, or even forgo their summer break. Experts advise creating specific budgets, setting maximum limits per event, and avoiding debt, in addition to considering strategies like suit rentals, group gifts, or organizing smaller celebrations.
The economic impact not only affects event organizers but also guests. The cost of attending a wedding, including gifts (between 150 and 200 euros per person), attire, and sometimes travel and accommodation, can unbalance a budget. This leads many to reconsider their summer holidays, opting for more economical or shorter options, especially in households with tight incomes.
