In July, the province of Sevilla experienced a loss of 4,215 Social Security affiliates, with a particularly sharp decline among women, who lost 4,014 contributors. This brings the total number of affiliates to 847,854, a figure not seen since March.
Despite job destruction, registered unemployment decreased by 1,618 people compared to June. This drop is partly explained by many citizens not registering with employment services due to slim job prospects and the increase in permanent-seasonal workers, who are not counted as unemployed after the latest labor reform. The total number of registered unemployed stands at 131,385, the lowest figure since June 2008, with women constituting the majority (1,546 fewer).
The sectors that most contributed to the decline in affiliation were education (-3,873), due to the end of the school year; hospitality and accommodation services (-3,714), as Sevilla enters its low season; and the agricultural sector (-2,139), due to the completion of harvesting campaigns.
Conversely, health and social services (+2,390), administrative activities (+1,059), and commerce (+982) showed positive performance. Public administration (+532) and water supply, sanitation, and waste (+504) also saw increases.
Regarding unemployment, the services sector accounted for 90% of the total decrease (1,451 people). Agriculture follows with 175 fewer unemployed, although many of these workers receive agricultural subsidies and are therefore not counted as unemployed. Industry and the group with no prior employment registered slight decreases, while construction was the only sector that did not experience a decline.
On an annual basis, Sevilla maintains a positive trend with 13,807 fewer unemployed and 22,137 more workers. The majority of those leaving the unemployment lists are women (9,293 fewer), although the increase in affiliates is similar between both sexes.
In the capital, unemployment remains below 50,000 for the third consecutive month, with 48,748 people registered at the end of July. The monthly decrease was 0.78% (382 people), and on an annual basis, the drop was 8.84%.
