The long-standing real estate agency Mijas Properties has changed hands after four decades. Juliette McCarthy and her son Joe are taking over the management, aiming to preserve its reputation while introducing a fresh vision.
After an extraordinary four decades at the helm of Mijas Properties, expat estate agent Susanne Teres has handed over the reins to Juliette McCarthy and her son Joe. The new owner, who worked for Teres for 15 years, brings a wealth of experience and deep local knowledge of the property market in Mijas.
Juliette, alongside her son, an experienced PR and marketing executive, will now run the centrally-based agency. Their goal is to maintain its long-standing reputation while introducing renewed energy and a fresh vision.

"We’ve just finished the transition. It’s very new, but the door is already open – and it’s lovely to be back. People are coming in all the time and saying, ‘great, you’re back’ with smiles on their faces. I really feel at home."
The agency, established in 1984, is built on a long-term commitment to personal service. In an industry often driven by volume, Mijas Properties has always adopted a different approach, 'listening carefully to each client and tailoring property searches to their needs', focusing on selecting the right homes to save clients time and ensure a more meaningful experience.
“
"We believe in really understanding what people are looking for. It’s not just about the number of bedrooms or the budget – it’s about how they’ll live in the property and what they want from it."
Between them, mother and son possess an intimate knowledge of the village and its property market. They consider it a privilege to work together. Joe, who recently returned to Spain after five years working in Taiwan, is currently focused on upgrading the agency's website.
“
"I think we work well together actually. We don’t often have any sort of issues with each other, even outside of work."
The market itself has 'recently stabilised' after a period of rapid growth. Juliette explains that while prices rose significantly last year, the winter was a slow period for real estate due to persistent rain discouraging buying and selling. However, the market is now levelling out, with more realistic pricing leading to properties selling quickly again.
“
"We have actually sold three properties in just a few days."
The agency caters to a diverse international clientele, including many British and Dutch buyers, and recently, a growing number of Americans.
