The company Moeve is currently in the fifth year of its comprehensive digitalization plan for its energy facilities across Andalusia. This initiative, launched in 2022, is already yielding a positive economic impact, surpassing the company's initial financial projections.
The project is built upon four core pillars: cloud-based data analytics, industrial internet of things (IIoT) and private networks, industrial mobility, and advanced artificial intelligence. These technologies aim to optimize process efficiency and streamline worker tasks, a benefit already reflected in the company's financial statements. Notably, in 2024, the company received recognition from the European Refining Technology Conference (ERTC) for its plant in San Roque.
“"The project originated from the company's management, who championed general digitalization, with projects for all centers and others tailored to each energy park."
Cloud-based data analytics serves as a central component, enabling the collection and upload of both historical and real-time information. Tools such as Knolar, Dremio, and Grafana provide employees with access to critical data from any location within the facilities, utilizing specialized equipment. This system has transformed record management, moving from linear usage to more intuitive interfaces in energy parks located in areas like San Roque (Cádiz), La Rábida (Palos de la Frontera, Huelva), and Tenerife.
To ensure robust connectivity, Moeve has deployed a private 5G network, installed by Vodafone, guaranteeing comprehensive coverage across its sites. This infrastructure, featuring autonomous connection points, ensures operational continuity even during power outages, thanks to backup generators. Additionally, the company employs supplementary networks to optimize internal communication.
Advanced artificial intelligence forms the final pillar, providing scenario predictions based on data from thousands of sensors. This AI supports workers by suggesting production optimizations or product maximization strategies, such as for aviation fuel, though the final decision always rests with the human professional. AI implementation has been progressive, starting with paraffin and expanding to cogeneration, fuel blending, and most recently, marine fuel.
Moeve's digitalization roadmap is updated annually. For 2027, the subsequent phases of the process are pending the outcome of a potential merger between the company and the Portuguese firm Galp. Nevertheless, all new Moeve facilities are designed with full digitalization from the outset, incorporating 3D modeling and digital twins, as exemplified by the future biofuel plant under construction in La Rábida.
