Energy company Iberdrola has selected the province of Huelva for the installation of its new green methanol plant, named 'Green Meiga', which was initially planned for Lugo.

This project, set to mobilize approximately 500 million euros in investment, aims to become a benchmark in the production of sustainable fuels in Spain. The decision significantly boosts Huelva's industrial sector, solidifying its role as a key hub for the energy transition.
The initiative, backed by 122.9 million euros in financing, will have the capacity to produce up to 100,000 tons annually of green methanol. Changes were made to the original project, which was in the basic engineering phase, to ensure its long-term viability.
The plant, initially slated for Begonte (Lugo) and declared a project of strategic interest by the Xunta de Galicia, will now be located in Huelva province. The industrial complex is expected to commence operations in the year 2029.
During the construction phase, an estimated 6,000 jobs are expected to be created. Once operational, the plant could sustain up to 426 jobs, including direct, temporary, and induced positions. Magnon, the renewable energy subsidiary of Ence, is also participating in the project alongside Iberdrola and Foresa.
Green methanol is a chemical compound with numerous industrial and energy applications, crucial for the decarbonized economy in the manufacturing of plastics, construction materials, synthetic fuels, and other products.
The arrival of 'Green Meiga' strengthens Huelva's position as a leading territory for renewable energy and sustainable fuels, adding to previous investments in green hydrogen and biofuels. This project consolidates an industrial ecosystem focused on clean energy and the progressive replacement of fossil fuels.
