Heavy rainfall in Huétor Tájar caused concern within the green asparagus sector, with flooded fields and significant uncertainty regarding production. However, the campaign has concluded with a positive outcome, highlighting the exceptional quality of the asparagus and the resilience of the region.
“"We were very scared with the floods, but despite everything, it's turning out to be a spectacular campaign. We had come from a very long drought, and the lands have absorbed water; this has made the crops that were saved of exceptional quality."
From the Centro Sur cooperative, known as Cesurca, initial fear turned into optimism. The combination of rain and soil recovery has led to a high-quality product, bringing satisfaction to the sector after weeks of uncertainty.
The quality of Huétor Tájar asparagus is attributed to the unique characteristics of the territory: the fertile land of the Vega, irrigation from Sierra Nevada, and temperature fluctuations between cold nights and warm mornings. These natural factors give the asparagus an authentic and distinctive flavor, maintaining the standard demanded by the market and clients such as Mercadona.
In the face of adversity, Cesurca activated a contingency plan to protect production. A crisis cabinet was formed to support farmers, and an emergency plan with biostimulants was implemented to regenerate plants. The inability to access fields with machinery necessitated alternative solutions, such as aerial application of treatments with the support of a local company, which resulted in crop recovery and the maintenance of quality standards.
The cooperative's history, which began with a small group of farmers and now includes over 1,100 members and approximately 1,500 hectares, has been crucial. This growth has been accompanied by the professionalization of all processes, from the field to the point of sale. Stable collaboration with distributors like Mercadona is essential for adjusting sizes, freshness, and presentation, ensuring that the asparagus reaches consumers in optimal condition.
