The president of the Federation of Hospitality, Gregorio García, expressed his disagreement with Aena's decision, calling it an "aberration" and noting that May is one of the busiest months for the airfield. García urged authorities to find alternatives to avoid a complete shutdown.
“"I doubt there isn't another way to do it differently, as has happened in other airports."
The representative of Granada's hoteliers recalled that similar works, such as those carried out at Santiago de Compostela Airport, opted to execute the tasks during night hours to avoid interrupting air traffic. He emphasized the tourism sector's reliance on the airport's operability.
“"We live off tourism, we need the airport, whatever little it works or however it works, but we need it. So, we absolutely do not agree with this work, with the airport being closed."
Aena announced the tender for the runway regeneration work for 19.7 million euros. The traffic interruption is scheduled from 2:15 AM on May 5, 2027, until 6:30 AM on May 27, 2027, with Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport as an alternative. Although most of the work will be done at night, certain critical areas require the complete closure of the runway.
