The agricultural organization ASAJA Almería has quantified the economic losses suffered by the almond sector in the province at 148 million euros, following a severe frost on March 30. This meteorological event, which saw temperatures drop to -2.5ºC for approximately four hours, severely impacted production, particularly in the Los Vélez region.
In the Los Vélez region, the most affected area, an estimated 70% of almond production was lost. Provincially, average losses are around 30%. Late varieties, such as guara and lauranne, were the most damaged, resulting in the loss of approximately 7,700 tons of in-shell almonds.
These frosts have hit at a crucial moment for almond tree development, causing a direct reduction in production and, consequently, in farmers' incomes. This type of extreme weather phenomenon is increasing in frequency, generating growing uncertainty and significant economic damage to the sector.
ASAJA Almería highlighted that while Agroseguro covers some of the damages, compensation does not fully cover the economic losses. Furthermore, the high cost of agricultural insurance against frost makes it difficult to contract, leaving many producers without coverage for such incidents.
Given this critical situation, the organization has urged the Junta de Andalucía (Regional Government of Andalusia) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to implement urgent economic aid. This aid would complement existing measures and aim to mitigate the impact on almond farmers, especially in areas like Los Vélez. A review and improvement of the agricultural insurance system have also been requested to encourage its uptake and facilitate access to frost coverage.
