The Official State Gazette (BOE) has published the order from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development granting transitional national protection to the 'Garbanzo Campiña de Córdoba' Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). This endorsement from the Junta de Andalucía represents a significant step forward in the process for this product to obtain the prestigious European quality seal.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development of the Junta de Andalucía had already issued a favorable resolution at the end of January, which was subsequently communicated to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. This ministry, in turn, was responsible for submitting the formal request to the European Commission, the body that regulates the procedure for processing applications for the registration of protected designations of origin.
The application was transmitted by the Ministry on February 9, 2026, with acknowledgment of receipt in the European Commission's registry on the same day. Subsequently, on February 15, 2026, the Asociación Garbanzo Campiña de Córdoba submitted the application for transitional national protection of the name 'Garbanzo Campiña de Córdoba' as a Designation of Origin.
The pursuit of this distinctive seal, formally initiated by the Asociación Garbanzo Campiña de Córdoba on August 8, 2024, has undergone months of technical analysis. The Junta certified that the product complies with the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 of the European Parliament on geographical indications and quality schemes, without receiving opposition during the administrative process.
This recognition not only seeks to protect the quality and name of the Cordoban legume against possible imitations but is also expected to boost rural development in the municipalities of the Campiña, ensuring the traceability and excellence of a crop that is a symbol of the Cordoban province.
