The general secretary of CCOO for Campo de Gibraltar, Manuel Triano, has sent a letter to the president of the Mancomunidad, Susana Pérez Custodio, proposing a meeting of the regional Economic and Social Council's plenary session. The aim is to support the Chamber of Commerce's proposal to establish a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the region, thereby fostering job creation and wealth.
CCOO considers the Chamber of Commerce's proposal timely and sees the need to build social consensus in Campo de Gibraltar to drive this initiative forward. An SEZ is defined as an area with distinct economic and fiscal regulations to attract investment, facilitate business activity, and promote development, offering benefits such as tax reductions and fewer administrative restrictions.
The union argues that an SEZ could be a crucial complement to capitalize on the opportunity presented by the new Gibraltar Treaty and to compete within the fiscal and economic context of the Strait's surroundings. Manuel Triano emphasized the importance of acting with a single voice to defend the region's common interests and define its future.
This initiative by CCOO comes shortly after the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA), through its president Gerardo Landaluce, expressed support for the idea, calling it a strategic response to transform the region into a hub for investment, innovation, and employment. The APBA advocates for a specific regime of fiscal, customs, and regulatory incentives.
Concurrently, the mayor of Algeciras and senator for the province of Cádiz, José Ignacio Landaluce, has submitted a motion to the Senate to support the analysis and potential implementation of an SEZ in Campo de Gibraltar, aiming to enhance competitiveness and job generation.
