The Junta de Andalucía has urged the central government to prioritize the high-capacity electrical connection between the provinces of Granada, Jaén, and Castilla-La Mancha, while also demanding increased investment in electrical transmission infrastructure in the region.

The Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mines, Jorge Paradela, highlighted the necessity of this connection, which is included in the Electricity Planning Proposal with a target year of 2030. During the opening of the GEODE Spring Seminar in Granada, Paradela expressed concern that the legal cap on investment in electrical infrastructure in Spain is 0.2% of the budget, whereas in other European Union countries, it triples, reaching up to 0.6%.
The international GEODE meeting, which brings together business representatives from nearly 80 countries, is being held at the new headquarters of the Cuerva company, located in the central Isabel la Católica square in Granada. The mayor of Granada, Marifrán Carazo, also participated in the inauguration of the symposium, which focuses on the future of electricity grids and the role of companies in the sector.
The Junta's request is part of the debate surrounding the future five-year state electricity planning plan, drafted by Red Eléctrica. Paradela emphasized that Andalusia makes a significant contribution to the national energy transition, providing between 25% and 30% of the new renewable energy installed in Spain. However, the region's electrical infrastructure is 40% below the national average, a situation the Junta hopes will be rectified in the new planning.

"Without energy, it is not possible to carry out not only industrial developments, which, evidently, generate employment and even the construction of housing itself. Therefore, this is a fundamental instrument currently under discussion, and we hope it will be resolved appropriately."

The minister stressed that the Junta has paid particular attention to Eastern Andalusia, where infrastructure deficiencies are more apparent. In addition to the Granada-Jaén-Castilla-La Mancha connection, the connection from Córdoba to Extremadura is also prioritized. The state electricity grid planning already includes proposals for Baza as the epicenter of new high-capacity infrastructures, foreseeing a connection with Almería (in Antas) and two new high-voltage axes from the Baza substation, one towards the Valencian Community and another towards Jaén and Castilla-La Mancha, to diversify circuits and facilitate the output of renewable energy from northern Granada.
