The ‘Safe-Immune Onco-Check’ project has developed a proposal for an artificial intelligence platform to anticipate, on a personalized basis, the complications many patients experience during cancer immunotherapy. This initiative received an award at the XII International Conference of the IMFAHE Foundation, an innovation event supporting global talent.
The primary goal is to enhance the safety of immunotherapy, a crucial medical advancement that can cause severe and unpredictable adverse effects due to immune system activation. Currently, precise tools to identify patients at higher risk before treatment initiation are lacking.
The proposed platform will integrate clinical information, biomarkers from biological samples, and molecular data using bioinformatics and artificial intelligence. A risk score will be generated to assist healthcare professionals in making informed, personalized decisions.
This integrative approach will employ machine learning techniques to analyze clinical data, analytical parameters, and immunological profiles, enabling early identification of patients most likely to suffer immunotherapy-related toxicities.
The tool will be particularly valuable for patients with pre-existing autoimmune diseases, a vulnerable group underrepresented in clinical trials. Anticipating adverse effects will allow for preventive measures, improved safety and quality of life, and optimized healthcare resources.
The project involves a multidisciplinary team of researchers from various institutions, including the University of Sevilla, the University of Valladolid, the University of La Laguna, HUVR-IBIS, the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, the HHMI Janelia Research Campus, RWTH Aachen University Hospital, and the University of Jaén.
