An international study, involving the Biomedical Data Science Lab (BDSLab) at the ITACA Institute of the UPV, has developed a system to evaluate the reliability of health databases. This work is part of the European QUANTUM project, funded by Horizonte Europa.
The UPV co-leads one of the work packages tasked with designing the tool that will generate quality and utility labels for future health data sets within the European Health Data Space (EHDS). The aim is to facilitate the implementation of the EHDS Regulation and the secure reuse of health information across the EU.
The study, published in the European Journal of Public Health, analyzed the practices of 27 institutions from 13 European countries, revealing significant differences in data quality assessment criteria and procedures. This lack of uniformity hinders data sharing and reuse between countries.
Researchers propose a multidimensional labeling system, similar to certifications for other products or services. The future label will inform about technical quality, documentation, coverage, and the maturity of the preparation processes for a database.
The BDSLab ITACA team has developed the QUANTUM Data Quality Labelling Tool, a solution validated with over 30 EU institutions. This tool will contribute to the trustworthy use of health data in Member States, improving decision-making in the healthcare sector.
