The firm Genetic PCR Solutions, based in Orihuela, has once again demonstrated its rapid response capability to health emergencies. This new PCR detection kit is capable of identifying the Andean variant of the hantavirus, a virus closely monitored by the scientific community.
The development of this test was accelerated following a recent outbreak detected on the cruise ship MV Hondius. The Andes variant is considered the most concerning of this viral family, as it is the only one with documented human-to-human transmission, albeit limited, which underscores the importance of early diagnosis.
“"We are capable of designing the kit with complete specificity, and it is possible that we will have it available by the middle or end of next week."
The new system was developed by constantly updating international databases that compile the genetic sequences of the virus. This has allowed for superior precision compared to current systems, ensuring unequivocal specificity.
The test also stands out for its high sensitivity, as it can detect very low viral loads, a crucial characteristic for anticipating potential cases. The company emphasizes that this product is intended exclusively for specialized laboratories and not for the general public.
“"It is absolutely for professional use and for molecular biology experts. It is not a private use test that can be sold in pharmacies."
After completing the validation process, the plan is to distribute it internationally to testing and molecular diagnostic laboratories. This is not the first time the Orihuela company has reacted quickly to a global health alert; in January 2020, it was one of the first in the world to develop a coronavirus detection kit, and has repeated the experience with other pathogens such as Zika, Ebola, and African swine fever.
