Gandia Port launches a natural system to improve water quality

The Valenciaport Foundation promotes a pilot test with macroalgae to capture CO2 and reduce pollutants in the area.

The Valenciaport Foundation has launched a pilot project at the Port of Gandia to purify port water using native macroalgae, an initiative aimed at improving environmental sustainability.

The system, called BIOREMED ALGAE, uses a modular biofilter located in a shipping container that occupies 16 square meters on the dock. This technology treats a flow of 6,000 liters of water per hour, absorbing pollutants and capturing CO2 naturally without the need for chemical additives.
The action is part of the European project TREASURE, co-financed by the Interreg Euro-MED program, which aims to raise environmental standards in Mediterranean port areas. Local implementation is coordinated by the Valenciaport Foundation in collaboration with the Valencia Port Authority through Opentop.
The process is based on the cultivation of macroalgae of the genus Ulva, commonly known as sea lettuce, which are harvested in the same area. The system acts as a climate infrastructure capable of reducing excess nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates, while generating useful biomass for the logistics-port sector.
