Last year, the Community of Madrid allocated a total of 929,923.15 euros in aid for the fishing sector. The Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Interior, Carlos Novillo, visited Mercamadrid, Spain's largest fresh food distribution platform, where he met with the Madrid-based company Terranova Seafood, a beneficiary of the Innobonos from the Madrid Institute for Rural, Agrarian and Food Research and Development (IMIDRA).
Novillo stated that the regional government aims to support fishing and promote its modernization, with the goal of enabling agri-food professionals to enhance their technological capabilities. Terranova Seafood, a member of the Agri-food Cluster, has been able to carry out its research, development, and innovation (R&D&I) projects on two occasions thanks to these subsidies, which have been awarded annually for five years.
In 2022, the aid focused on extending the shelf life of seafood through new technologies. In 2025, a project was launched to reduce water consumption and improve industrial production processes. Additionally, the regional executive co-finances this activity with the European Union through the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), allocating nearly 830,000 euros last year for three fishing companies to access new markets. For 2026, an investment of 1.5 million euros is planned for the same objective.
Since 2022, the Community of Madrid has invested 3.5 million euros to finance 42 research projects through the Innobonos, aiming to improve the competitiveness and economic profitability of companies, as well as promoting the development of technologies for the conservation of biodiversity.
This year, 2026, marks the fifth consecutive year of these grants. The deadline for submitting applications is next July 20. Each project can receive up to 100,000 euros to advance in competitiveness, sustainability, and digitalization, covering costs for personnel, assistance, external services, inventory and consumable materials, audit report expenses, and general expenses.
