Unemployment in the Community of Madrid Rises for Third Consecutive Month, Reaching 282,625 Unemployed

Despite the monthly increase, the region leads interannual job creation and records the lowest figure for March since 2008.

The Community of Madrid has seen an increase in unemployment for the third consecutive month in March 2026, reaching 282,625 people, according to SEPE data.

The number of unemployed individuals in the Community of Madrid stood at 282,625 during March 2026, representing an increase of 0.12%, adding 342 more people to the unemployment rolls compared to February. This figure marks the third consecutive month of rising unemployment in the region, according to the report from the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), part of the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy.
Despite this monthly increase, the Community of Madrid stands out in interannual job creation, leading the country with 112,599 new workers and a growth of +3%, half a point above the national average. During this period, the region has generated more than 21.5% of jobs in Spain, with an average of 308 daily jobs, bringing the total number of affiliates to 3,879,420, the second-highest figure in the historical series.
The Central Government's statistics for March also reveal an interannual drop in unemployment of -11,192 people (-3.8%), leaving the total number of unemployed at 282,625. This is the lowest figure for a March since 2008, marking 24 consecutive months below 300,000 unemployed.
The interannual reduction in unemployment has been observed among both women (-3.9%) and men (-3.7%), and across all age groups: under 30 years old (-0.4%), 30 to 54 years old (-6.2%), and over 55 years old (-1.5%). All sectors of activity have also seen declines: Services (-2.8%), Construction (-13.3%), Industry (-2.3%), and Agriculture (-11.1%).
Regarding self-employed workers, their number has increased by 4,402 people (+1%) compared to March of the previous year, reaching a total of 441,542 self-employed individuals, the highest figure recorded to date.
