This data represents a significant milestone for the region, consolidating it as the lowest volume of unemployed individuals detected in a March month over the past eighteen years. In annual comparison, the community has experienced a notable improvement, with 11,192 fewer unemployed people than in March of the previous year, translating into a year-on-year decrease of 3.81%.
However, in the immediate comparison with February 2026, there was a slight increase of 0.12%, adding 342 people to the public employment service lists. At the national level, the overall trend is also positive, with a decrease of 22,934 people in unemployment compared to the previous month, placing the total number of unemployed in Spain at 2,419,712, the best record in almost two decades for this period of the year.
Regarding hiring, out of more than 1.3 million contracts signed in Spain during March, 44% were permanent, indicating growing job stability. In the Community of Madrid, economic activity was reflected in the signing of 189,212 contracts last month, an increase of 15.71% compared to February, and the number of contributors to Social Security reached 3,879,420.
The robustness of the Madrid system is mainly supported by the General Regime, which brings together 3,434,177 workers, while the self-employed collective maintains a considerable weight with 441,542 registered individuals. Other specific sectors, such as home services and agriculture, also contribute to regional affiliation.
Specifically in the city of Madrid, registered unemployment in March was 135,488 people, the lowest figure for the third month of the year since 2008. This represents a decrease of 3.4% compared to the previous year, with 4,761 fewer unemployed than in March 2025. Compared to February, unemployment in the capital experienced a decrease of 0.1%, equivalent to 76 people.
