The Fishermen's Guild of Tarragona plans the creation of a workshop to process and add value to locally caught fish, a key initiative to ensure the viability and future of the city's fishing sector.
This proposal, supported by the Tarragona City Council, is part of a technical and diversification feasibility study expected to be completed by July. The study anticipates that the workshop and direct commercialization will be the top priority options for the sector.
The Port of Tarragona, with an approximate investment of 1 million euros from Next Generation funds, would be responsible for financing both the equipment and complementary projects. This measure would allow fishermen to increase their profit margin from catches, as noted by a representative from the Department of Fisheries.

"In the Catalan Mediterranean, we are quite far behind how the Cantabrian guilds operate, which for many years have been carrying out very large projects of producer organizations to undertake industrial transformation projects, and we must do this here."
The options for the workshop are varied, including the production of cooked dishes, preserves, fillets, fourth or fifth-range products, or a focus on gastronomy. The study, which began in April, will evaluate these possibilities during the last quarter of the year to select the most suitable ones.

"Fishermen, you are not alone, and from the administrations, we have the responsibility to support you."
A representative from the Port of Tarragona has reiterated the commitment to facilitate the technical, legal, and economic viability of the workshop, as well as to contribute to its financing and construction within one of the Port Authority's facilities.
Although white fish fetches good prices, blue fish has been below desired levels in recent years. A representative from the Fishermen's Guild of Tarragona has defended the sector's determination to move forward, emphasizing the importance of advocating for fishing days before European institutions and, if necessary, resorting to legal action to protect the sector's interests against detrimental measures.
In 2025, the Tarragona fish market auctioned nearly 1.3 million kilograms of fish, generating over 9.1 million euros, solidifying its position as one of the most important in the country. However, the guild has experienced a loss of over 30% of its fishing fleet in the last ten years, highlighting the need for initiatives like the workshop to maintain its relevance in the local blue economy.
