The multinational company Nissan has announced its intention to implement an employment regulation file (ERE) that will affect 211 workers in Catalonia, representing almost 40% of its current workforce in the region.

This decision by the Japanese company will impact its three plants in the Catalan territory. The spare parts center located in El Prat de Llobregat will be the most affected, with 110 of its 122 employees included in the staff reduction.
The company thus continues its strategy of staff reduction in Catalonia, following the closure of its factories in Zona Franca de Barcelona, Montcada, and Sant Andreu de la Barca four years ago, a measure that affected 2,500 workers.
Currently, Nissan operates a technical center in Zona Franca with 383 employees, the spare parts center in El Prat with 122, and another in the same locality dedicated to other management areas, with 64. The planned departures include 86 employees from the Zona Franca technical center and 15 from the functional areas of El Prat, according to union reports.

"Workers' representatives have expressed their refusal to acknowledge the start of the consultation period due to 'formal procedural defects'."

the unions
The unions Sigen-USOC, CCOO, and UGT have rejected the management's proposal and announced that they will inform the workforce about future actions and mobilizations. The 211 affected workers in Catalonia are part of a broader Nissan plan to lay off 900 employees across Europe, aiming to improve competitiveness and efficiency in the face of global losses.
The company plans to reduce 20,000 jobs worldwide between fiscal years 2024 and 2027, in addition to decreasing its plant network from 17 to 10 by 2027. Management and unions will meet again on Thursday at the Department of Labor of the Generalitat de Catalunya to continue negotiations.
