The investment is part of a broader plan that aims to allocate nearly 127 million euros by 2031 to build four new freight loading and unloading railway stations in Catalonia. These new infrastructures will be located in Lleida, l'Ebre, Penedès, and l'Empordà.
According to Executive sources, the creation of these stations responds to a "real demand" from companies in each area, who need to improve their rail services for goods transport. The Government's objective is for 10% of goods transported in Catalonia to be moved by rail before 2030.
The Lleida station will receive the largest investment, with 72 million euros allocated exclusively to its construction. Furthermore, it is in a more advanced stage of the project, with preliminary studies already completed and the budgetary allocation secured, according to Government sources.
This initiative is part of Catalonia's railway terminal strategy, which envisions a network of seven stations spread across the territory for freight loading and unloading by train. Currently, three of these stations are already operational.
