The construction sector in Catalonia has increased work visas by 13.46% during the first half of the year, although most of this activity is not intended for housing.

According to data from the Architects' Association of Catalonia, the area approved for construction or renovation has reached 2.41 million square meters. Although housing remains the main use, with nearly 1.6 million square meters, its growth has stalled at 0.54%, while actions for other purposes have experienced a 54.24% increase.
The number of new build and renovation housing units has decreased by 2.59%, standing at 7,897 units. Sector experts warn that current production, estimated at about 15,000 new homes per year, remains far from the 25,000 units considered necessary to meet the country's current demand.
Territorially, the city of Barcelona records the sharpest drop in new housing construction, with a 39.62% decline. Conversely, other areas such as the rest of the Barcelona province or the central regions have shown increases in their construction activity.

"The situation is critical because the housing stock is aged, a drawback with energy and climate implications; of safety, and of adaptation to the increase in life expectancy."
