The iconic liquorice lozenge Juanola has celebrated its 120th anniversary in Sant Quirze del Vallès, a municipality where its production has been established for over two decades. The event served to recall the trajectory of one of the most recognized brands for throat care.
The plant located in the Can Canals industrial estate in Sant Quirze produces nearly three million units annually of this traditional remedy, made with ingredients such as liquorice, eucalyptus, and anise. The company, owned by Angelini Pharma, relocated production to this town in 2005.
The Sant Quirze del Vallès City Council has positively valued the company's decision to maintain its activity in the municipality for over twenty years, considering it an example of the role of established companies in the local productive fabric. The mayor, Elisabeth Oliveras, congratulated Angelini Pharma for preserving the brand's essence and highlighted the importance of companies with a vocation for service and improving quality of life.
The history of Juanola dates back to 1906, when Manuel Juanola devised the lozenges to treat coughs and sore throats. Initially sold by weight, they became a pharmaceutical specialty in 1912 and expanded beyond Catalonia in 1930. Angelini Pharma acquired the brand in 1996, fostering new growth opportunities.
Over 120 years, Juanola has maintained its most emblematic lozenge, recognized by its red box and characteristic flavor, while also incorporating new formats to adapt to consumer needs, passing from generation to generation.
