The Government has opened applications for aid for vessels engaged in trawling, purse seining, and surface longlining with home ports in Catalonia, corresponding to the fishing closures planned for 2026.

The total subsidy amounts to 8,096,465 euros, with a potential increase of almost an additional million euros. These funds are co-financed by 70% from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF). The remaining 30% is provided by the General Administration of the State for trawling, purse seining, and surface longlining, while the Generalitat de Catalunya contributes its share for the sonsera, octopus, and chain trawl methods.
A significant new feature this year is the implementation of a new management system designed to speed up the processing and payment of aid to fishermen. The Generalitat plans to issue two specific calls to resolve applications as temporary closures conclude, thereby minimizing the waiting period between the cessation of fishing activities and the receipt of financial compensation.
Furthermore, close collaboration has been established with the Social Institute of the Navy to coordinate the management of these aids. The aim is to prevent potential financial difficulties for workers who may have already received other benefits before receiving this specific compensation.
