The measure, formalized through a Ministerial Order, marks the administrative completion of a strategic project that will allow both islands to operate under a unified electrical system. This integration will enable coordinated management of generation, energy reserves, and the incorporation of renewable sources, overcoming the energy isolation that has historically affected La Gomera.
The infrastructure, which required an investment exceeding 100 million euros, connects the Chío substation in Tenerife with the El Palmar substation in La Gomera. The link consists of a double 66 kV circuit and over 36 kilometers of submarine cable, reaching a record depth of 1,145 meters, making it the deepest project of its kind in Europe.
“"This interconnection is not a luxury; it is a guarantee and a matter of justice and equal opportunities for the island's residents."
With this connection, the island's system gains robustness and technical capacity, allowing for reduced generation costs and improved efficiency. Furthermore, it strengthens the commitment to sustainability by integrating the capacity of the five wind farms installed on the island since 2023.
