ITER and ULL Present System for Repairing Photovoltaic Modules

The Technological and Renewable Energy Institute (ITER), in collaboration with the University of La Laguna (ULL), has presented a new system for repairing photovoltaic module backsheets at EU PVSEC 2026 in Rotterdam.

The research group from the Photovoltaic Cell Laboratory at ITER has unveiled advancements from its work, developed within the framework of the SIROCO and CID projects. This research combines polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) coatings with fiberglass and thermosetting resins, aiming to provide a functional solution for the on-site repair of commercial photovoltaic module components.
The presentation at the European conference addresses the development of new materials for repairing backsheets. The proposal introduces a novel formulation and mixing methodology for PVDF dissolution, replacing N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) with gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) and reducing the acetone content. Polymer degradation was controlled through low-temperature agitation.
The resulting solution allows for the creation of low-porosity coatings suitable for direct brush application. The system is completed by incorporating a fiberglass reinforcement laminated with epoxy or polyester resins onto the PVDF film, using an intermediate layer of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) to enhance interfacial compatibility.
The developed coatings have passed microscopic visual inspection, low-voltage discontinuity, and electrical insulation tests up to 1,500 V. Additional characterization studies are currently underway to determine their mechanical adhesion properties. The research focuses on restoring the functionality of commercial photovoltaic modules.
