A digital economy consultant has voiced concerns regarding the Canary Islands' extreme dependence on the tourism sector, emphasizing the importance of technology integration and economic diversification for sustainable development.

During his participation in the II Aenaga Business Conferences, the expert discussed the integration of Artificial Intelligence in business, stressing the need to balance technological advancement with the human element. He highlighted that technology should be viewed as a means to achieve goals, while customers and employees represent the fundamental reason for any business.

The specialist, with over a decade of experience visiting the archipelago, has observed positive evolution in the entrepreneurial and technological spirit of the islands, with the emergence of innovation hubs and new startups. However, concerns persist regarding the high reliance on a tourism sector that, by its nature, offers low wages and presents few barriers to entry, potentially driving down salaries and limiting productivity.
Regarding the shortage of skilled labor, the consultant pointed out two main factors: a lack of incentives to work due to social benefits and the absence of adequate vocational training tailored to market needs. He argued that increasing the minimum wage by decree, without a corresponding increase in productivity, can lead to the most common salary being lower than the minimum, indicating a structural problem in the labor market.
Although he did not identify a specific project, the expert highlighted the incorporation of technological elements in the Canary Islands' hotel sector, particularly in the use of Big Data to enhance customer experience. He also mentioned that tax incentives have contributed to the establishment of startup development hubs, representing a promising outlook for the islands' economic diversification.
