Unemployment Decreases in the Canary Islands: 2.6% Fewer Beneficiaries in May

The number of people receiving unemployment benefits in the islands has seen a month-on-month and year-on-year decrease, according to ISTAC data.

In May 2026, 91,324 people were receiving unemployment benefits in the Canary Islands, representing a 2.6% decrease compared to April and a 1% drop from the same month last year.

The Canary Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), using data from the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy, has released figures reflecting this trend. In April, the number of beneficiaries was 93,766 people, while in May 2025, 92,284 individuals were receiving this aid.
The coverage rate, which measures the percentage of unemployed individuals with previous work experience receiving benefits, stood at 68.2% in May of this year. This figure represents an improvement compared to the 65.6% recorded in May of the previous year.
