The European Union is advancing its 'European Digital Wallet' project, a digital identity wallet designed to allow citizens to store most of their official documents on their mobile phones and use them securely in all member countries.
The goal is for this tool to become a common system for identification and carrying out procedures from 2027 onwards, enabling the verification of personal information without the need to carry physical documents.
According to the EU, the European digital identity wallet (eID) will allow users to access public and private services, store digital documents, and create legally binding signatures. Member states must make these wallets available to all citizens and businesses before the end of 2026.
This platform will integrate documents such as the National Identity Document (DNI), the driver's license, Social Security documentation, health cards, educational certificates, banking information, and travel documentation.
Citizens will thus be able to prove their identity or carry out procedures in other European countries using only their mobile phones, facilitating travel and eliminating the worry of losing physical official documents.
While the European digital wallet represents a significant advancement, residents of Tenerife already have access to similar tools. The MiDNI application allows for the presentation of a digital version of the national identity document, while the MiDGT app enables carrying the driver's license and vehicle documentation in digital format, in addition to carrying out traffic-related procedures.
The main difference of the future European wallet is that it will encompass all these documents in a single platform and will be valid in all European Union countries.
