The archipelago has signed an agreement with Red.es and the Ministry of Health to deploy digital technology-based healthcare assistance services, covering both primary care and chronic patient monitoring. This initiative aims to transform healthcare through digitalization and the use of new technologies.
The funding, from ERDF 2021-2027 operational programs within the Pluriregional Operational Program of Spain (POPE), will be allocated over four years to the application of artificial intelligence and advanced analytics techniques to clinical and management information.
Key action areas include remote monitoring of chronic conditions, advanced health analytics for diagnostic assistance and early detection, and support for healthcare professionals, particularly in primary care. The Únicas project will focus on the diagnosis and monitoring of rare diseases.
The overall objective is to free up professionals' time, ensure equity in medical service provision, and improve care quality by optimizing National Health System resources. Developed AI models will comply with applicable regulations and guidelines from the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA).
SCS Director Adasat Goya highlighted digital transformation as a fundamental pillar for the healthcare system's quality, equity, and sustainability, overcoming challenges like geographical fragmentation. Red.es General Director Jesús Herrero noted the agreement will strengthen healthcare with advanced technology, and Secretary General of Digital Health Juan Fernando Muñoz emphasized its importance within the SNS Digital Health Strategy.
