The municipality of Mijas has reached 7,974 jobs linked to the tourism sector during the second quarter of 2026, representing a year-on-year increase of 3.60%.

Tourism activity continues to strengthen its weight in the economy of Mijas. According to the latest Social Security data, corresponding to the second quarter of 2026, the municipality has 7,974 workers in the tourism sector, a 3.60% increase compared to the same period last year.
The Councilor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez, positively assessed this trend, confirming the sector's role as one of the main economic and labor drivers of the municipality. "These figures reflect tourism's capacity to generate opportunities, maintain year-round activity, and support thousands of families in Mijas," he stated.
Within the sector, accommodation and restoration activities account for 5,539 jobs, a 4.29% increase from the same period last year. Specifically, restoration employs 3,983 workers, while accommodation reaches 1,556 employees.
Jerez emphasized the daily effort of entrepreneurs, self-employed individuals, professionals, and workers who contribute to maintaining Mijas' quality and competitiveness as a destination. "The employment evolution shows that the sector remains strong, but it also compels us to continue working hand-in-hand with those who directly know its reality and needs," he explained.
In this regard, the municipal official highlighted Mijas Lab, the Tourism Council, whose next meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 15th. This forum allows for analyzing the sector's evolution with companies and professionals to guide municipal action based on real data and the needs expressed by those working daily in tourism.
The hospitality sector currently has 409 businesses in Mijas, a 0.49% increase from a year ago, and concentrates nearly half of the tourism employment and business fabric linked to the sector. For Jerez, these figures reinforce the need for constant dialogue with the sector and for adapting municipal planning to the real evolution of the activity.
The councilor also pointed out the importance of continuing to advance in de-seasonality and promoting segments such as sports tourism, golf, gastronomy, rural tourism, and cultural offerings. "Mijas has the conditions to continue generating activity beyond the summer months. Our challenge is to consolidate, together with sector professionals, a competitive tourism model capable of creating stable employment and extending its benefits to the entire municipality," concluded Jerez.
