The ports of the Strait contributed 18.1% of the total 325.4 million tons moved by state docks, meaning nearly one in five tons of cargo passed through Algeciras. After a start to the year affected by storms, the port has seen five consecutive months of growth, reducing the accumulated drop to a minimal 0.6%.
Forecasts for the remaining months of 2026 suggest that the Port of Algeciras will return to positive figures in terms of activity volume. Compared to other Spanish ports, Valencia handled 46.6 million tons with a 3% drop, while Barcelona registered 41.6 million tons and a 2% growth.
Nationally, general interest ports grew by 0.4% through July, exceeding 325.4 million tons. This growth is attributed to the boost from containers and liquid bulk, despite an early year marked by economic and geopolitical uncertainty. General cargo saw a slight decrease of 0.8%, with a drop in containerized cargo (-1.5%) and a slight increase in conventional cargo (+0.8%).
Containers increased by 1.2%, surpassing 11 million tons, driven by import-export operations. Liquid bulk improved significantly by 3.4%, reaching over 107 million tons, thanks to a rebound in gasoline, fuel oil, and chemical products. Solid bulk moderated its decline to 2.7%, with the food group leading the movements.
Ro-ro traffic decreased by 0.5%, moving over 44.81 million tons. The number of merchant vessels fell by 2.2%, while passenger traffic exceeded 22.74 million, a 1.1% decrease compared to the same period last year.
